Telling your story the way it was always meant to be told

Reading Time: 4 mins

Behind the origins of every world-changing startup is a story, not a product or a business model. It’s the narrative behind a founder’s journey that transforms an idea into a mission, rallying investors behind a shared vision. In today’s noisy market, where innovation is abundant and attention scarce, your story isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s your superpower.

Why stories matter in the early days

This is especially true of the early stages of a startup, where founders cannot hide behind the safety of steady margins and impressive growth metrics. Founders must instead face the upward fight of proving the unproven to sceptical investors while wooing early adopters who would much rather prefer their established competitors. In such a market, numbers alone cannot win hearts – but stories can.

An authentic story is, in many ways, the lifeblood of most startups, conveying the “why” behind the “what”. It transforms a simple pitch into an emotional connection between founders, employees, product, and investors, by showing the vision behind the product.

Transforming story into action

An authentic founder story can galvanise even the most wary investors into action. They showcase resilience, creativity and adaptability, the most important qualities an early stage investor looks for in their founders.

One such story (in fact, the one that inspired this piece) came from the founder of a consumer food brand we worked with recently. In our very first meeting, he told us how he turned a failing fundraising trip into a million dollar success story, all through the power of one unforgettable meal.

As he arrived in the US to begin what would be their first fundraise, all 23 investors who had initially confirmed meetings went completely silent. For most founders, this would have marked the end of their efforts, but not for him.

Undeterred, he packed pots, pans, and ingredients, into a van with his wife and infant child. They went on the road, cooking meals in motels and personally delivering these meals to each of the investors who had declined, leaving notes asking them to enjoy the food, even if they couldn’t meet.

This relentless effort paid off massively. Within days, 22 of the 23 investors reached out, apologized, and invited him to pitch again. The result? He secured capital from all 22 individuals, walking away with just over one million dollars!

When we began working with him, we were adamant that this story become a foundational part of his narrative. All we did was help refine it further so that it resonates even more powerfully with investors in future meetings, showcasing his resilience, adaptability, and his belief in the business. This refined pitch has played a pivotal role in securing strategic investments for his brand as they expand internationally into a new market, earning him support from some of the most prestigious VCs and family offices in the region.

Crafting your story

Of course, not everyone’s story will be like this one but that’s the beautiful thing about stories – they’re unique to you and your journey. With that being said, we know that sometimes it’s difficult to get started on how to structure your story, so here are some thoughts on how to craft your first story:

  1. Start with your “why”: Why does your startup exist? What problem are you passionate about solving? Why is it important?
  2. Make it personal: Share moments of struggle or insight that shaped your journey. Authenticity is magnetic.
  3. Focus on the future: Tie your story to your vision. Stories inspire when they create a sense of belonging in a greater purpose.
  4. Keep evolving it: A story isn’t static. As your startup grows, so will your narrative. Keep refining it to include new milestones and learnings.

Your story is more than just a retelling of your journey; it’s a bridge to every investor and consumer you hope to reach. In the chaotic early days, it’s your North Star—a reminder of why you began and why you must keep going. In the hands of a founder, a story isn’t just powerful; it’s transformative.
